DESIGN.
BUILD.
GROW.

Enabling more efficient and effective crop production.

Addressing the acute food, water, reforestation needs of our time. All through technology, science, and know-how.

We look at things VERY differently.

The vertical farming and broader Controlled-Environment-Agriculture (“CEA”) sector have seen massive growth and capital influx over the past decade, but many have failed, and broadly done so for the same reasons.

We have spent years building an in-house, innovative model that is designed not to make the same mistakes.

Our future is looking up

(Est. 2016)

Global leaders in integrated growing system technologies.

A vertical farm is only as good as its growing system, the data that feeds it, and the data it produces. We’ve figured out the right formula.

Dating back to 2016, our technologies are developed with unique insights, born from our years of experience: growing, marketing, selling and distributing vertically farmed produce to hundreds of restaurants and thousands of homes across the UK. It’s these insights that have enabled us to develop a unique, intelligent system that’s both effective and scalable.

More than 90% of our technologies designed in-house, with in-house manufacturing & R&D

A dedicated team working across software engineering, plant sciences, operations, hardware engineering, and a successful project and research portfolio to call upon, we are uniquely positioned in a market that is primed for growth.

Our turnkey, automated, vertical farming systems are also powered by our own sophisticated software; and we are ready to deploy on a global scale.

OUR TECH

Fully-integrated growing systems (designed and built in-house) providing hands-free automation from seed to harvest

All powered by DIANA, our in-house Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) system. This integrated approach is designed to push the boundaries of data and innovation, and eliminate operational human-led bottlenecks that exist in most systems.

OUR HARDWARE TECH STACK

The hardware components of our advanced vertical farms that offer the kind of flexibility and technology needed for this important sector

Automated (moving to autonomous) growing systems

To fully eliminate the inefficiencies of “outdoor” growing and to eliminate the operational bottlenecks of simpler vertical farms that are reliant on significant amounts of human labour (and with that the risk of pathogens, diseases, human error, and broader), automation is absolutely crucial, especially in larger farms.

Advanced 5-channel multi-spectral LED Lighting

Designed in-house, the selection and manipulation of lighting is perhaps the most critical element of a vertical farm; the decision of which could break your farm in a matter of years or make it a continuing success over decades. We are only just at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to “growing algorithms” and have already seen material gains in yield, quality, shelf-life, and shape–all of which we can manipulate purely through different LED regimens.

Bespoke, suspended growing systems

We are the only company to erect a superstructure (or integrate with the building) and hand our growing systems. Combined with the automated growing system and “brother-sister” robots, we can eliminate almost all aisles, making maximum use of any growing space, no matter how big or small.

Full integration

Integration is an important part of (any) system that is often overlooked. Integration is what truly makes a “system”, can be monitored more closely, and is integral to our offering. We also consider any farm we build and the team that sits behind it integrated with our business.

DIANA SaaS

Our entire approach or design of the system without “something” running the show. That “something” is DIANA, our SaaS solution that, amongst core operational features, not only provides growing data (that is regularly updated by our in-house plant science team), but also collects, analyses and then develops new algorithms. This is only possible at present with the support of our “human” operators and plant scientists, but the more data that is gathered over time, the smarter DIANA becomes–with an autonomous system as the most logical step

Longevity

Material selection in growing environments is critical. The food sector has to date been built on the use of cheap plastic and other materials that require regular maintenance and are difficult to clean, leading to more downtime than should be expected. We, on the other hand, use high-grade stainless steel across our system which not only tackles those issues, but also has a useful life of up to 50 years with an 80% recyclability rate.

Constant analysis and maintenance support

In addition to DIANA’s constant monitoring and customer support, we look for and train local partners in case a new part is needed or a similar maintenance issue occurs.

THE BRAIN OF OUR SYSTEM

DIANA and the data insights that it generates is at the heart of everything we design, and do

Operational Oversight

Looking beyond what’s growing in your farm and how, the operational oversight tool increases the productivity and operational efficiency of your business overall. Understanding important aspects such as staffing, key tasks (at a system and staff level), and being able to communicate these across the team lead to better overall performance.

The Product Library

Leverage VF’s growing recipes and know-how across a wide range of product types and growing parameters, as well as building your own product profiles. Our team has spent years developing ‘baseline’ recipes and these data (which improve over time) are provided to you.

Granular Control Over Every Metric

Develop, input, and monitor your own unique growing algorithms, leveraging the unmatched level of flexibility across VF’s growing systems. Lighting recipes, airflow speed, nutrient composition, irrigation frequency, and photoperiods can all be applied at a very granular level – constantly tailoring the system to the needs of each crop you grow.

Farm System Dashboard

Bringing it all together, is the farm system dashboard, which provides consistent (remote and on-site) understanding of what’s happening across your farm, 365 days per year. This includes power consumption, space allocation, seeding frequency, environmental metrics, robotic movements, and other metrics relating to predictive maintenance and output.

How we bring together our tech and software to build you a farm that meets your needs… plus our other add-on services

DESIGN
Step 01

We work with you and your business’s requirements to design a farm that achieves your objectives, no matter where you are in the world

You may know what you want to grow, who you want to service, your customer archetypes, have a rough view on unit economics, and even have a site identified and funding in place – or you may just have an idea. This is where we are here to help and involves everything from CAD designs to complex financials.

As technology developers and builders of advanced vertical farms, we look for serious counterparties who want to address key goals and build at scale (which is needed in this sector), who also have the funding to do so–and realise the returns.

Beyond that, we take care of everything, in some instances including operating the farm. If not, we have a network that will work with us to do so.

BUILD
Step 02

Our experienced team will then build your farm, working with local specialist contractors and fitters, dependent on geography

Building of the vertical farm on a full, turnkey basis, with all works excluding provision of the building and utilities infrastructure under VF’s remit. Continuous supply of data services, automation scripts, and core plant algorithms through our SaaS offering, DIANA, once the farm is operational. This is provided through a SaaS contract with relevant service provisions.

GROW
Step 03

Our services don't stop at our technology...

The sector is young and needs nurturing. Running a farm is not an easy undertaking. Our prior and ongoing operating experience, team, and technology collectively put us in a great position to help you through your journey, whether it be through an interim arrangement or permanent operation under contract. Farms that require our assistance through a more comprehensive operating service are supported by a rolling operating and maintenance (O&M) agreement, which places VF at the centre of the operating structure.

We’re also more than happy to work with established operator and grower brands, joining forces and focusing on the things we’re both best at.

OPTIOnal SERVICE
#01

Not quite sure of your move into this sector yet?

When our Founder setup VF in 2016, he threw everything he had at it, and there was an enormous amount of risk if it failed – he’d lose everything. But almost 10 years later, we have a lot more information about the sector, those that have failed (and why), those that have succeeded (and why) and the data pool has become far richer.

If you’re having these kinds of jitters, don’t read these global market reports. Work with us and in 4-6 weeks, we’ll undertake a robust feasibility study for your perusal. We charge for this as it requires a lot of work (across teams), but it is a very small investment compared to investing in a full project. If you’re considering this, get in touch with us via the contact form and we can chat to discuss scope, location, deliverability, and everything else you have in mind.

Crop-Science-as-a-Service (“CSaaS”)

The level of sophistication of our systems, combined with DIANA, means that every day is like a day spent on the playground for our plant scientists as there are so many variables, technologies, and tools to play with. Identifying the optimal growing parameters for any given plant species requires this level of system, and to date we have accomplished much across a wide range of species (including trees for enhanced survivability rates for planting) and over 12 projects that we won from Innovate UK. In fact, we have the best record in terms of wins.

But what can CSaaS do for you? It’s a pretty open book, from you giving the input parameters, us running trials, and providing you with the results – or you can do the inverse to set us a challenge to carry out longer studies in search of the most optimal growing conditions over the trial study period. Optionally, you could rent growing space at any of our growing centres. If of interest, let’s chat!
