An interesting read on McKinsey & Company on how Grocers have the power to change the food system.

The study explains this is because:

1. Grocers are ubiquitous—even the smallest town has a grocer.

2. They’re integral to local and national economies, often being the largest private employer in an area. 

3. They have the power to both influence consumer choices and collaborate with farmers, suppliers, and even other grocers.

4. And, finally, they can benefit from the transition, because sustainability can go hand in hand with value creation. 

“While sustainability presents potential risks, it also offers opportunities for grocers’ top lines, margins, and costs—adding up to around 25 to 30 percent” 📈

Vertical farming is just one piece of the puzzle, however, it should be a key strategy that Grocers adopt to tackle pressing issues such as land degradation, loss of #biodiversity due to industrial arable farming, the toxic effects caused by #fertilizers, and #water scarcity (to name but a few!).
